GALILEO & HISTORY OF SCIENCE

Galileo Museum: the Museum of History of Science (1.5 hours)
Tour description: The visit takes place entirely within the Museum of History of Science. It is a recommended experience to those who are expert and passionate about science and in particular to those interested in the history of astronomy, geography and cartography. Observing the tools of the collection and retracing the names of the most important scientists we will discover how important Tuscany has been in the history of scientific development.
The measurement of the time and the astronomical observations: The collection located inside the museum was inaugurated by Cosimo I and was then constantly enriched by its successors, which concentrated from time to time on the disciplines that were most fashionable at that time . The tools that the collection collects are mainly to measure time, space and other aspects of the sensitive world. By moving from Egyptian knowledge and the progress of astronomy in the pre-Christian age, we will have the opportunity to consider the closure against the sciences of the first Christianity, the errors of schools previous to the Copernican one. Some tools in the collection are among the oldest in the world or the largest ever made.
War science: A particularly interesting section is that dedicated to the history of war, divided into ballistic and navigation sciences. There are tools to simplify complex mathematical calculations, and scale reductions.
The “gems” of the Galileo Museum: The museum boasts an important collection of astrolabe and dials used for measuring time and to predict the position of the constellations, some of these are among the oldest in the world. The museum also houses the largest turnaround in the world, a wooden jewel and gold leaf, made at the end of the 500 and the tools forged by Galileo Galilei during its activity as mathematical and astronomer. Among others, we cannot forget the lens, through which Galileo was able to discover the moons of Jupiter, the original compass and telescope. Finally, we will discover that the museum also houses Galileo’s average finger, preserved inside a glass display case like a relic. Want to know more about Florence?
