ACCADEMIA GALLERY

Private tour to the Accademia Gallery (1 hour)

  • Two museums in one ticket: As its name implies, the Accademia was first instituted as a school: its opening took place under the Lorenese, in order to the provide citizens with a more structured education system and to allow the artistic recovery of Florence. Here the statue of David was installed on the year 1873: it was transported on railways from Piazza della Signoria. Visual arts had been taught at the Academy since 1874 by the grand duke Peter Leopold, after the suppression of a huge benedictine female monastery. In the year 1849, under the “fine arts” denomination, Music Conservatorium was also established at the Academy.
  • Two museums in one ticket: Both Academies are still operating in their original locations, while the Gallery, located at the middle of the same block hosts both the visual art museum and the collection of musical instrument. It is a rather small museum and one hour is sufficient to see the most important masterpieces, hosted on the ground floor, of the main artistic periods between 13th century and 16th century.
  • A small museum, but not an easy one! A guide is highly recommended in order to visit the Accademia Gallery because paintings do not appear in each room in chronological order. For this reason, for example, it will be necessary to contextualize the “Rape of the Sabine women” by Giambologna in comparison with other earlier examples of renaissance exhibited in the same room.
  • The birth of a hero: Seeing David with from real is an unforgettable experience and I have often noticed the surprise and thrill of my visitors. As to understand what makes this the most famous in the world, we will have to retrace the events before Michelangelo’s arrival on the scenes, and recall the misadventures occurred to a marble block destined to become David. In his carving Michelangelo transformed the famous biblical hero into someone very similar to a fearless Greek god, peaceful and unweaponed. It is the masterpiece of a young and already famous artist who was deeply influenced by ancient classical art: Michelangelo was at the time just 26 years old. Want to know more about this important commission? Book a tour to the Duomo complex!
  • What can one see besides Michelangelo’s David? We will see from very close Michelangelo’s funerary mask and look at the traces impressed by his own tools on the skin of the unpolished Carrara marble. These unfinished works, made by the great artist at a mature age, were part of a vast project commissioned by Pope Jiulius II. The contrapposto of David, represented by Michelangelo before the fight with Goliath, vanishes in the contorted and weary poses of the Prisoners carved many years later. They constitute the first instances of abstract art, since their torsion combined with the their incompleteness provides a stronger emotional expression. We will also have the chance to see from close models and replicas in plaster, made by Lorenzo Bartolini teacher and sculptor at the Academy of fine arts during the nineteenth century. The Musical collection boasts some of the most precious instruments in the world. We will not miss the Medici quintet of instruments, among which Antonio Stradivari’s tenor viola and other interesting examples that also document the importance of Florence in the history of music. Anza of Florence also in the history of music. If you want to know more click .
